ORFEUS is looking for a Software developer/seismologist.

ORFEUS, the European organization for coordinating and promoting broadband seismology in Europe, is looking for a Software developer/seismologist.

He/she will be working within the ORFEUS data management team at the KNMI in The Netherlands, specifically within recently started EC-infrastructure projects like NERA, VERCE and EPOS. The position is temporary for the duration of four years.

Your task will be to integrate and develop a comprehensive set of data quality control (QC) services for seismological waveform data within the ORFEUS Data Center (ODC). This involves:
- Structuring the existing QC procedures into services to data providers and data users,
- Developing new QC products in collaboration with other international data centers,
- Designing and implementing innovative products improving data quality with the help of data providers and the research community.
- Upgrading data management tools

Qualifications
An academic degree either in seismology or related subject, good programming skills or, alternatively, an academic degree in software development or similar competence and affinity with earthquake seismology. You will be working within a team, both locally and internationally. We expect you to take initiative and be result oriented. Experience with seismic network data acquisition and processing software (e.g Antelope ®, SeisComP) is an advantage. You should have good knowledge of Linux/Unix, C, Perl, Python, (My)SQL. Knowledge of an object oriented language like Java or C++ is an advantage. As you will be working within a multinational, diverse team, we require excellent communication and cooperation skills together with a good knowledge of the English language.

We offer a dynamic, small multidisciplinary group of enthusiastic and highly motivated colleagues. You will be involved in innovative EC-infrastructure projects developing the next generation data services for earthquake research. For this we cooperate intensively with many international partners within and outside Europe and, therefore, your work may involve travelling. Within the KNMI you will be cooperating within the infrastructure group representing multidisciplinary data services. We offer excellent opportunities to develop own initiatives and attend relevant additional training. Salary will be in the range 2513 – 4380 Euro for a full time position. Vacation and end-of-the year gratifications of respectively 13% and 8% are not included in these amounts. The scaling will depend on the experience and background of the applicant.

The ORFEUS staff is hosted by the seismology department of the KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute; www.knmi.nl). The ORFEUS mission and activities can be found on its web page www.orfeus-eu.org. The KNMI conducts applied and theoretical research on the basis of seismological and other geophysical observations, like infrasound, and provides information to the general public on earthquakes and related phenomena.
