PhD 1: Prediction of strong ground motion for large earthquakes and seismic hazard mitigation

PhD 2: to be defined

PhD 1

Supervisors: Prof. Shamita Das (Oxford, UK) & Dr. Luis Dalguer (ETH Zurich)

Eligibility: EU citizens. UK citizens not resident in the UK for 3 years prior to start of project also eligible.

Funds: Funding to support the project for 3 years is available through the EU porject "QUEST"

Brief Project Description

This project, leading to a doctorate at the Department of Earth Sciences, Oxford University,

UK, involves using seismograms from background seismicity, foreshocks and aftershocks to estimate the ground motion characteristics of potential large earthquakes in different tectonic settings. Various rupture model scenarios, based both on theoretical modelling as well as on actual known rupture processes of large earthquakes, will be used in the calculations. The method will be tested using data from large earthquakes in California and Japan. Earthquakes having variable rupture parameters such as rupture speeds, stress drop, will be considered. In particular, earthquakes transitioning from sub- to super-shear rupture speeds will be modelled.

Applicants should have a first degree in geosciences, physics, applied mechanics, engineering or a related field. Strong analytical skills, some experience in programming, data analysis and visualization (Matlab, C/C++ and/or Fortran, Unix shells) are expected. A background in numerical modeling woud be advantageous.

As a first step to applying, please send a CV, a short statement of´research interest to Prof. Shamita Das (e-mail: ">)
