Field Trips

We will organize two field trips during the QUEST workshop: one is a half-day trip and one is a full-day trip. The half-day trip will take place on Friday 15th of July. Meeting point will be the lobby of the Hotel Örk. Departure will be at 13:30. The full-day trip will take place on Sunday 17th of July. Meeting point will be the lobby of the Hotel Örk. Departure will be at 07:30. Please remark that both excursions may be modified or shifted to another day depending on the weather conditions.

 

Thingvellir2 Half-day trip (15.07.2011)

Western Volcanic Zone and South Iceland Seismic Zone: including Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss. Drive from  Hótel Örk via Nesjavellir to Þingvellir, then to Geysir and Gullfoss. Back to Hótel Örk.

Possible stops:
Nesjavellir (need to drive up to overlook area)
Þingvellir (normal faulting)
Geysir (geysers)
Gullfoss (waterfall)
2000 fault rupture, at Skeiðavegamót

 

 

 

Full-day trip (17.07.2011) Landmannalaugar2

Eastern Volcanic Zone: including Landmannalaugar and Eldgjá. Drive from Hótel Örk to Hekla, from there preferably via Dómadalsleið to Landmannalaugar, then Eldgjá and  down to Mýrdalssandur, then Vík and Eyjafjöll, back to Hótel Örk.

Possible stops:
Selsund, 1912 fault rupture
Hekla tephra
Dómadalshraun
Landmannalaugar (rhyolite area)
Eldgjá (long eruptive fissure)
Mýrdalssandur
Vík in Mýrdal (shop, toilet)
Eyjafjöll
